Things I Love Seeing in Books

Hey everyone, today I'm going to be talking about things I love seeing in books! I saw this done all over YouTube and BookTok, and thought it would be cool to try. So, I'm basically going to be talking about things that I absolutely adore when I see it happen in a book, and giving two books with that thing. With all that out of the way, let's get into it!

Friends to Lovers

I feel like this doesn't require much of an explanation, basically just when the love interests start off as friends and then it turns into a romance. I know a lot of people really like enemies to lovers, but I'm a much bigger fan of friends to lovers, especially if it's a slow burn, since I hate enemies to lovers slowburns.

Friends-Lovers Books:

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Unique Formats

I love being able to read books quickly, and when a book has a mixed media format, that's just made so much easier. An example would be in Daisy Jones and the Six, where it's told in a podcast style dialogue only format. It doesn't have to be told entirely in a unique format, but some multimedia aspects would be nice.

Books with Unique Formats:

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Short Chapters

As I mentioned before, I love being able to fly through books, and short chapters just make books go by so quickly. I keep saying that I'll just read one more chapter, and before I know it I've finished the book. I feel like the ideal chapter length for fast reading is between 1-3 pages, but up to 5 is fine.

Books with Short Chapters:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Anything written by Nicola Yoon

Books about books / books with bookworm main characters

I'm sure we all enjoy when a book is relatable, and one of my favorite ways of relating to characters is through books. I love it when I'm reading a book and I see the name of one of the other book's I've read (such as in I See London, I See France), and when the character is a bookwork, that just happens so much more frequently.

Books about books / with bookworm main characters:

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Suggested Reading by David Connis

Novels in Verse

At this point you all know that I love it when I read books quickly, and what better way to read a quick book than to read a novel in verse? I usually take under an hour to read books in verse, though that obviously depends on the length of the book. I find that a lot of the time books written in verse also have the most beautiful quotes (stay tuned for a post about my favorite quotes from The Sun and Her Flowers), and they tend to speak to me more.

Books written in verse:

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

The Princess Saves Herself in this One by Amanda Lovelace

Elaborate Art Under the Dust Jacket

My favorite, favorite, favorite thing in books is when there's really gorgeous elaborate art under the dust jackets. Unfortunately, most books are blank under the dust jackets, but there are a few books that I know of with super elaborate art.

Books with elaborate art under the dust jacket:

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Witty Banter

Ah, yes, banter. Reading witty banter just makes me so, so happy. If you check my photos app on my phone, half of them are just pictures of lines of witty banter from books.

Books with loads of witty banter:

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Non Murder Mysteries

I think a lot of people really enjoy mysteries (I know A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is one of Booktok's favorite books), but as someone who gets scared super easily, I could never really read them. I did really enjoy the Truly Devious series, but even that took me a few years to start even after I had bought it. Of course, just like most others, I do enjoy a good page turner, so I've found that the best way of getting one is by reading mysteries where the mystery isn't related to murder.

Non-murder mysteries:

The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr

The Jigsaw Jungle by Kristin Levine

That One Thing That Has Nothing to do with the Plot but keeps coming up

I've mentioned it before, but I'm going to mention it again. This is basically those little things in books that keep coming up. They don't move the story along, and the book could totally continue without them, yet they keep appearing. I feel like this'll make more sense when you see my examples. The only risk here is that if this thing is a food, you'll end up really craving it, but that's a small price to pay.

Books with these little things:

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (waffles)

Opposite of Always by Justin A Reynolds (cereal)

Makeover Scenes

Think: Princess Diaries. You know that one scene where the character is just totally transformed? Usually includes lots of people swarming around the character and trying on outfits? Yeah, that's the glorious makeover scene. As someone who would love to be royalty, there's just something so fun for me about watching people try on cool clothes and go through a total transformation. I don't know, it's just the coolest thing to me.

Books with epic makeover scenes:

The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

So yeah, that's the end of my list of things that I love to see in books. Did you guys agree with any of these? Let me know below, and while you're there, feel free to leave post requests. As always, I hope you have a great rest of your day.

YA Travel Book Recommendations

Hi everyone, and welcome to another post! Today we're going to be talking about books where travel is a central part of the plot. I love to travel, and as a result, I love reading about traveling. Does it make me want to go everywhere? Yes. Am I upset about it? No. Most (if not all) of these books fit into the young adult genre. In addition to the title and author I've included a brief description of each book. All of these books were at least 4 stars (in my opinion), so I hope you enjoy! This list isn't ranked at all, and I think all of these books were great. With all that being said, let's get into the books! The Astonishing Color of After by Emily XR Pan The story follows our main character, Leigh, following her mother's suicide. Leigh believes that her mother turned into a bird, and wants her to go to Taiwan to meet her grandparents. She goes to Taiwan, and tries to find her mother as the bird. The Astonishing Color of After is a beautiful story set in b...

Book Haul (12/04/21)

Hey y'all! I went to Books-a-Million today, and picked up a few things, so I just thought I'd share.  Punk 57- Penelope Douglas I saw this book all over BookTok, and thought I'd give it a go. I don't usually go for books with multiple perspectives, but since it's only 2, I think I'll be able to handle it. I've never read anything with the pen pal trope before, so I'm really excited! A List of Cages- Robin Roe I haven't read a lot of books with ADHD rep, but I've been wanting to, so this seemed like a perfect book. I'm super interested in psychology, so I'm hoping this book will have a little bit of psych related stuff in it, but we'll see. It seems like it's going to be a really well written and beautiful story, so after a year of wanting to read it, I'm ready to see how it is.  Emergency Contact- Mary HK Choi If you know me, you know that I love books with mental health rep, and I've heard that not only is this boo...
